"Intersections" - An animatic about gender equality

This was an Animatic done for the promotion of gender equality for the D-Source SDG contest.

The subject of gender equality has been one of prolonged deliberation. However, the third gender has seldom been involved in the same, in spite of clear cases of their unfair and inequal treatment in society, being observed everyday. This film titled 'Intersections' aims to briefly bring to light this very inequality, through the story of twins who faced life in very different ways and circumstances. This is based on information derived from research, primarily from the account of a member of the same community as well as from secondary reports of the lives and circumstances of many others alike.

The story follows Ramesh and Mahesh, 13 year old twins who shared a very tight bond inspite of their apparent difference in interests. One day, Ramesh impulsively runs away from home as a reaction to being thrashed by his parents for simply exploring his gender identity, leaving Mahesh confused and broken. They get on with their lives in different ways, Mahesh under the care of his supportive parents and Ramesh, in the company of others who saw themselves in him and he, himself in them. While Mahesh experienced the "privilege" of being deservedly educated and employed, Ramesh, now Ramya, was forced by circumstances and the outlook on their identity, into sex work. While Mahesh enjoyed the company of his friends, Ramya was subject to mistreatment by the very society that forced them into that life. Eventually they meet and Mahesh is pressured by his friends and his own pain, into condemning Ramya. Driven by guilt, he later looks for Ramya. Being mistaken for Ramya by drunken men, the turn of events opens his eyes to the reality his sibling faced. Their story doesn't end, rather continues with the faint hope that Ramya and more like them can have better, fairer lives.
